Using Data from the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses 3:30 – 5:30 PM

Session Description

The National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (NSSRN) dataset is the only publicly available national dataset of registered nurses and, thus, provides a unique opportunity for states with no state-collected RN/APRN data to develop measures on RNs/APRNs in their state, and opportunity for researchers to conduct cross-state comparison research. This two-hour hands-on workshop will provide attendees with skills for accessing, understanding, and using the data to obtain descriptive RN/APRN measures and answer research questions. Topics covered in the workshop will include:

  • How to access the NSSRN data and years of data available
  • NSSRN survey design
  • Downloading and using the data
  • Survey weights: why we use them and how to use them in NSSRN
  • How to develop good research questions
  • How to use Excel and SPSS to answer at least one research question

Participants will be encouraged to obtain state-level descriptive information on RNs/APRNs or answer at least one research question of their own with the data; groups of participants from the same state or participants who want to collaborate on the same research project can work together. There will be opportunity for feedback on participants’ work.

This workshop is designed for people who are interested in using the NSSRN to provide descriptive information about RNs/APRNs in their state and those who would like to conduct research using NSSRN data. The workshop will start with basic information about the data and how to conduct research using the data. Therefore, participants at all skill levels are welcome.
